QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A valid teaching certificate obtained through the South Dakota Department of Education
  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education
  • Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Training
  • Teaching experience (preferred).
  • Requirements to the above qualifications that the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

  • To lead students toward the fulfillment of their growth potential within their intellectual, physical, emotional, psychological and maturation abilities.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students, shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the building principal and follows district approved curriculum.
  • Creates a classroom that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting the needs of the students as well as the district’s philosophy of education and established instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) when available.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment within district discipline policies.
  • Evaluates student’s academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parent/guardian and school counselors on student’s progress and interpret the schools program.
  • Identifies student needs, refers students in need of assistance and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting with learning or other problems which may affect their ability or opportunity to learn.
  • Assists students in developing respect for self, for others, and for property.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level (which will assist the teacher to be aware of current educational, instructional and social teaching aids).
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the building principal in the evaluation process in conformance with district policy and the Lennox Education Association Master Contract.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials. The teacher is responsible to keep the building principal informed as to the need of materials and repair of equipment.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday with the understanding that certain times are designed as time or duty free lunchtime.
  • Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student’s activities.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other duties that may be assigned.
