Head Coach

 

Reports To: Activities Director 

 

Purpose of the Position

The Head Coach is responsible for leading a successful athletic program that supports the development of student-athletes academically, athletically, and socially. The Head Coach will model and promote Lennox School District values, ensuring a positive, educational-based athletic experience.

 

Supervision & Guidance

The Head Coach operates under the supervision and guidance of:

 

  • Activities Director 
  • High School Principal
  • High School Assistant Principal
  • Superintendent
  • Director of Student Services

 

 

Evaluation:

The Head Coach will be evaluated by the Activities Director, with input from building and district administration as appropriate, based on:

 

  • Program leadership and culture
  • Student-athlete development (academic, behavioral, and athletic)
  • Communication with athletes, parents/guardians, and staff
  • Compliance with district and SDHSAA expectations
  • Professionalism and representation of Lennox School District

 

 

Education/Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) preferred
  • Previous coaching and/or teaching experience preferred
  • Participation in high school and/or college athletics preferred
  • Teaching assignment within the building preferred to support student relationships, program alignment, and daily engagement with student-athletes

 

Certifications & Requirements

 

  • Fundamentals of Coaching (one-time requirement)
  • Sports First Aid or Prevention and Car of Athletic Injuries (renewed every two years)
  • Concussion in Sports - What You Need to Know (renewed annually)
  • The Collapsed Athlete (renewed every two years)
  • Heat Illness Prevention (renewed yearly, fall sports only)
  • CHEER ONLY Safety Certification (every four years)

 

 

Program Leadership

 

  • Plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of the program (grades 7–12 when applicable)
  • Establish and communicate program vision, culture, and expectations
  • Develop long-term program growth and sustainability
  • Align program expectations with middle school/junior high levels

 

 

Coaching and Player Development

 

  • Plan and conduct effective, age-appropriate practices
  • Teach sport-specific skills, strategies, and fundamentals
  • Promote and support multi-sport participation
  • Align with district strength and conditioning programming

 

 

Student-Athlete Development

 

  • Promote academic success and monitor eligibility
  • Teach leadership, accountability, and teamwork
  • Model and enforce appropriate behavior and sportsmanship
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all participants
  • Encourage involvement in multiple activities and programs

 

 

Staff Management

 

  • Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches in collaboration with the Activities Director
  • Provide leadership, communication, and mentorship to coaching staff
  • Conduct preseason and postseason meetings

 

 

Compliance and Expectations

 

  • Follow all SDHSAA rules and Lennox School District policies
  • Maintain required certifications and eligibility standards
  • Adhere to offseason contact and participation regulations
  • Ensure proper supervision at all practices, contests, and team activities

 

Communication

 

  • Maintain clear, consistent communication with:
  • Student-athletes
  • Parents/guardians
  • Coaching staff
  • Activities Director
  • High School Office
  • Other district employees
  • Follow the Parent–Coach–Activities Director communication protocol
  • Provide timely and appropriate program updates

 

 

Game and Event Management

 

  • Prepare team for competition
  • Coordinate travel, uniforms, and equipment
  • Promote sportsmanship among players, coaches, and spectators
  • Represent Lennox School District with professionalism

 

 

Equipment and Budget

 

  • Manage inventory, care, and storage of equipment
  • Submit budget requests and demonstrate fiscal responsibility
  • Collaborate with booster organizations and fundraising efforts

 

 

Program Promotion and Community Engagement

 

  • Build positive relationships with youth programs and community members
  • Support camps, clinics, and program development opportunities
  • Promote school pride and positive community involvement
  • Encourage student-athletes to support other Lennox activities and events

 

 

Essential Functions and Duties

 

  • Assist in the direction and coordination of interscholastic athletic programs
  • Collaborate on decisions regarding athlete participation
  • Promote a positive image of Lennox athletics within the school and community
  • Operate in compliance with conference and SDHSAA policies
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff
  • Assist with fundraising efforts as appropriate
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Activities Director or administration

Work Year and Compensation

 

  • This is an extra-duty, extra-pay position (July 1 - June 30)
  • Duties may occur throughout the calendar year based on program needs and sport season
